Helps for Home Teaching

Guidelines for Home Teaching

THE PROSPECT of teaching our own children at home can be daunting.  It is easy to feel overwhelmed and completely inadequate.  The guidelines give simple, accessible practical advice and help based on our experience of home-educating our six children and on many years of teaching in UK schools.

The book is suitable for parents with young children (of, say, three or four) up to about 9 or 10 years old.  It lays a foundation for on-going learning to secondary level.

The aim for Christian parents is, by God’s grace, to establish their children’s education and worldview on the Rock (Matt. 7:24-27).  We have tried to base everything on the principles in God’s Word – his supernatural guide for every aspect of life in this world.

• British in approach

• Soundly related to the real world

• Biblical foundation to subject matter and teaching method

The Bible gives great insight into Maths and the way we teach it. It shows us that God has filled the world with mathematical wonder and beauty. He has woven maths into the fabric of everyday life. We use maths to help us recognise God’s glory and serve him.

Teaching Reading

THIS APPROACH and method, based on biblical common sense, was developed at home and used very successfully with 4 to 7-year-olds in a London primary school. It refers to reading books from the Ladybird Key Words reading scheme but the approach can be used with any graded reading material.

“Success in reading is not due to brilliant, exciting methods and teaching. It comes from steady, daily practice, which gradually builds reading ability – like a builder making a house, brick on brick, day after day. Long sessions given at irregular intervals will not be much use. 10 or 15 minutes daily will build confidence and success steadily …”

The Book includes 7 pages of instructions and 32 pages of a ‘book of words’ beginning with each letter of the alphabet for practising letter and sound recognition, plus some word games.

History & Geography Guidelines

THESE GUIDELINES show how we can teach our children from the perspective of “the Lord of heaven and earth” even if our own educational background is limited.

The Guidelines were originally for Christian schools.  Home-educating parents have found them helpful as guides to subject matter and teaching from a Christ-centred perspective.  They have been expanded bearing in mind the needs of home educators. Although initially designed for use in primary school, they are also very relevant to secondary education.

“For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.”  Colossians 1:6
